Did the long and bitter Michigan winter have you pining for a day at the beach? Summer might be a few months away, but you can treat your family to a day of summer fun March 1-April 14, 2019 at The Beach Detroit
This temporary interactive art installation, which was produced by the Library Street Collective and the Cranbrook Art Museum, is currently on display at Bedrock in downtown Detroit and lets local families experience a day at the beach with a twist.
Instead of sea and sand, families “swim,” “splash” and play in millions of anti-microbial plastic balls. But that’s really the only notable difference between this display and an actual beach – well, apart from the fact that this display is indoors.
In fact, the display features two piers that extend into the sea of balls, deck and lifeguard chairs, umbrellas and other elements found during a typical day at the beach.
Sound like your family might be into visiting? The Beach Detroit is open at Bedrock in Detroit noon-8 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and noon-6 p.m. Sundays from March 1 till April 14, 2019.
Admission to this display is free, but reservations are required and can be made through the exhibit’s website. Families should bring an extra pair of socks for each person, as shoes are not allowed in the ball pit.
