The Wizard of Oz Children's Educational Exhibit

Kids can venture into Emerald City territory – from Dorothy's room to the Yellow Brick Road itself – at The Wizard of Oz Children's Educational Exhibition. It opens Oct. 1 at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn and runs till Jan. 9, 2012. Families can explore the iconic 1939 film's lessons and basic science, all in a recreation of the movie.

On Auntie Em and Uncle Henry's farm, for instance, children learn where food really comes by harvesting veggies, "milking" a pretend cow and more. They'll also use their own muscles to bring a mini tornado to life. Then it's time for fun in MunchkinLand, featuring funhouse mirrors, soft-sculpture rainbow blocks and a voice synthesizer. Top it off by making a scarecrow and building a heart for the Tin Man. And for mom and dad? Be sure to see the real ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland during the movie's filming.

This traveling spectacle, the first of its kind licensed by Warner Bros., is open during the museum's normal 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily hours (minus Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). It's free with admission: $15/adults, $11/ages 5-12, free/4 and under. There's an "after-school sneak preview" that's 1-2:30 p.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. Sept. 30, too. Watch for other special activities, too!
