Tomorrow night, Olympic lovers around the world will be glued to their TVs watching the opening ceremony for the London games. Whether or not you and your family are fans, the Olympics are always a favorite part of summer every four years. If you are indeed big boosters, host your own lawn games in your backyard (maybe with some of the Olympic inspired gear featured in our Gimme, Gimme! blog) – and award your Olympians with these simple medal pins made from glass jar lids.
Materials
- Jar lids
- Metallic acrylic paint (gold, silver, bronze)
- Black acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Black construction paper
- Pin back
- Hot glue gun
- Patriotic garland (optional)
Instructions
1. Start out by cleaning your jar lids. (You don’t want smelly medals!) Let dry.
| 2. Next, apply a small amount of metallic paint to each of your lids. I made gold and silver medals, but you can make as many as you like of the top four medals – don’t forget pewter for fourth place! Let the paint dry. |
| 3. After the paint has dried, write a 1, 2 and 3 on each medal. Again, let dry. |
| 4. Trace a piece of black construction paper the size of your jar lid. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the lid and apply the paper. This will help clean up the lid if there are any labels still left on it.
5. After the black paper, add the pin back with a small amount of hot glue. |
| 6. Add, if you like, the patriotic garland with a drop of hot glue on the outside of the lid.
7. Wear your medals with pride – and enjoy the games! |
