Vintage Summer Pins Made from Old Belt Buckles

Do you and your family enjoy going to garage sales, estate sales and thrift stores? Summer is a perfect time for hitting up sales in your neighborhood and, if you’re adventurous, hosting a sale of your very own. If you’re hoping to build up your family’s stash of craft supplies, these shops and backyard bargains are a great way to go about that. This week on Make It, we’ve got a simple, quick-to-make pin your children can create using a belt buckle – a 25-cent find at most garage sales.

Materials

  • Vintage or used belt buckle
  • Round stickers or decorating supplies
  • Kraft paper
  • Pin back
  • SuperTape
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

Instructions

1. I found these vintage, plastic belt buckles a while back and have had them in my stash ever since. They make a great foundation for pins; T-shirt slides work well, too, for a bigger pin.
2. To decorate the center of your pin, cut a kraft paper circle the size of the opening of the buckle. For this yellow piece, a Paper Source sticker was the perfect size. For a true DIY approach, have your child decorate the kraft paper circle however she’d like.
3. To secure the decorated center to the belt buckle, add a line of extra-sticky SuperTape to the center of the buckle. Press the kraft circle onto the tape.
4. Finish your pin by adding a pinback to the back of the belt buckle with hot glue. Once the glue has cooled, your child is ready to wear her new pin.
