Chili Mustard Onions is Detroit’s First Vegan Coney Island

And this Detroit restaurant is kid-approved. Read on to learn about the delicious vegan offerings at the dad-owned Chili Mustard Onions.

Your kids won’t even know their coney dog is meat-free.

You can expect this and more at Chili Mustard Onions, a unique vegan coney spot in Brush Park – the first of its kind in Detroit – that has been feeding vegans and non-vegans alike since it opened Aug. 1, 2018.

Owner, founder and chef Pete LaCombe went vegan six years ago after a car accident. “That accident changed my life,” he says. “It gave me a new lease on life.”

Veganism is the practice of abstaining from eating or using any animal products. For LaCombe, saving animals is a no-brainer. “I knew my whole life hurting animals was wrong.”

And once he made his vegan chili and cheese sauce (featured in almost every item on the menu), he knew he wanted to open a vegan restaurant.

Kid-friendly favorites at Chili Mustard Onions include the “little mock,” which is a smaller take on the diner’s ultra-popular “big mock” burger made with pea protein patties and a dairy-free “special sauce.”

There’s also a soy-based hot dog, mycoprotein “chickun” or “beetballs” (made from a base of organic beets, carrots and onions). For dessert, try the soy milk soft serve.

LaCombe says Chili Mustard Onions is a welcoming environment for all. “Every single person is welcome here, period. From tattoos to piercings to hijabs, everyone loves being here.”

Chili Mustard Onions is located at 3411 Brush St. in Detroit. To learn more, give the coney a call at 313-462-4949.
