Kid-Friendly ‘Uber’ Helps Families With School Year Transportation

For families at districts with little or no bussing, Kid Karr offers another much needed option for families to transport their kids to and from school.

With the beginning of the school year comes the chaotic mornings. There’s too much to do in too little time and, of course, the minor matter getting the kids to class before the bell rings.

But it’s even more challenging if your child attends a school that may not have ample, or any, bus options.

That’s why Tanesha Reed of Belleville created Kidd Kar – which is “like Uber, but for kids,” she says, and primarily services kids who attend charter schools. As a working mother of a toddler, Reed knew there had to be an easier way.

“I was always in a rush,” she says.

During the school week, Kidd Kar, now in its second year, provides rides in shuttles and vans to and from school for children ages 2-18 at schools in Belleville, Canton, Livonia, Plymouth, Romulus, Westland and Ypsilanti. Parents simply reserve a ride for their child, or children, on the website.

Reed interviews potential drivers herself – all have chauffeur licenses, are CPR trained and undergo background checks and drug testing. She says she focuses on hiring “kid-friendly” drivers with “good personalities.” Ample seat belts and car seats (based on age given in reservation) are provided for children, as well.

Kidd Kar also has an app that lets parents track their child’s trip in real time.

Along with Kidd Kar, Reed created Kid Chauffer for little busy bees. This service provides personalized rides to extracurricular activities on weekdays and weekends.

Both services accept students throughout the school year.
