Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker at Detroit’s Fox Theatre

Your family can catch two performances of the popular ballet on Dec. 20, 2015 at this downtown Detroit theater.

From the littlest aspiring ballerina to the most seasoned ballet-goers, everyone in the family is sure to delight in a holiday performance of the Moscow Ballet’s much-loved Great Russian Nutcracker, coming to the Fox Theatre in Detroit on Dec. 20, 2015.

The production, called “the ultimate holiday tradition” by the award-winning ballet company, will be in town for two performances only. Families can catch either the 3 p.m. matinee or the 7 p.m. evening performance.

The Great Russian Nutcracker promises to thrill audiences with its expert dancers and dramatic expression, hand-sewn costumes, beautiful backdrops and special effects, including life-sized nesting dolls and a three-headed Rat King.

The principal ballerina is Karyna Shatkovskaya and the principal danseur is Vladimir Tkachenko. New to the ballet this year are set designs by Academy Award nominee Carl Sprague.

“This was not my first Nutcracker, so I thoroughly enjoyed the different take of the Russian-ness of it, and the demand for authenticity of the setting,” Sprague said in a press release. “I am very pleased with the Russian scene shop’s rendering of my designs.”

The Detroit stop on Dec. 20 is one of 80 locations for the popular production. The Moscow Ballet, comprised of nearly 40 dancers, also performs other classic ballets each year including Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, and Cinderella.

Ticket prices start at $30. Groups of 10 or more and Girl Scout troops can receive discounts by calling 800-320-1733. Discounts are also available at the box office for seniors ages 65-plus, members of the military and AAA members.
