My Obsession: What Metro Parent’s Editors Love This Month

What do Metro Parent’s editors love right now? A whole bunch of stuff! We just had to share these cool products with our readers, including a book, a game, an app and more. If you know of something else we should share, tell us about it and your obsession could score you $25 and a spot in an issue of Metro Parent!

Thelonius Monster’s Sky-High Fly Pie

For the past 10 years I’ve been editor of Metro Parent, at least 10,000 children’s books have crossed my desk. This one by Judy Sierra stands out. A gloriously gross rhyming story about a monster who bakes a fly-pie, it begs to be read aloud. It has a great message about making the most of monstrous mishaps (#kitchenfail). Plus, the simple drawings by The New Yorker cartoonist Edward Koren add a touch of charm to the sweetly stomach-churning story.

In the wilds of Meijer and Costco, this grocery app is my spirit guide. It suggests common items as I type, has space for notes, categorizes stuff tidily and lets me share lists with other app users. You can get fancy with ingredient images and recipes, but the best part? Tapping an item after tossing it in my cart and seeing a satisfying red slash appear. Basic version is free for iPhone and Android.

KORRES Modern Greek Apothecary

A Greek pharmacist and a chemical engineer founded this natural beauty and skincare line in 1996. Twenty years later, I’ve discovered KORRES thanks to my lovely mom, Leah. Their aromatic washes in particular – basil lemon, papaya mango, jasmine rose and more – don’t irritate my sensitive skin like many other scented soaps do. Line runs $12-plus.

When you have a game-obsessed husband, you sometimes moonlight as a board game geek. With that, I submit my love of Splendor. It’s a card-collecting game with tactile gem tokens and just the right amount of strategizing. Its suggested age is 10-plus but my son is younger and loves it, too. Perfect for family fun or after-bedtime chill. Because when the playroom is a mess and deadlines loom, sometimes you just want to win at something. $28.49 online at Target.

Fat & The Moon Deodorant Cream

This glorious handcrafted natural deodorant – made with coconut oil, aluminum-free baking soda and a number of essential oils – got me through those crazy 95-and-humid days this summer (in an apartment without air conditioning no less). It’s great if you’re looking to add more natural cosmetics to the shelf. Plus, it doesn’t leave stains on clothes, smells delightful, is cruelty-free – and the small 2-ounce jar lasts for months. $12.
