Wally's Frozen Custard in St. Clair Shores

Wally's Frozen Custard has been an east-side standard for more than 60 years. And, as of fall 2012, this tasty haven has very kid-friendly new digs in St. Clair Shores.

What's in store? For one, the shop is open year-round, sporting a drive-thru to get your fix even in the chill. And – get this – it has a big, yellow-door garage that houses Wally's iconic catering fire engine, which delivers that rich, creamy frozen dairy to local parties and events.

"What kid doesn't love ice cream and fire trucks?" asks Eliza Ahearn, who's co-owned Wally's with her husband Matt for the past nine years. "They can come and check out the fire truck and have custard, all in one trip."

The theme carries to its menu, too. The "coffee station" has the signature "Engine W-1," a latte with caramel and chocolate. "Jaws of Life" features raspberry and white chocolate. Or add a "Defibrillator" – a shot of espresso.

It's about quadruple the size of its original 700-square-foot location in Harper Woods, which Ahearn says they outgrew. But the core stuff hasn't changed here.

"We wanted the same nostalgic feel," she says. The classic walk-up service window is still operating, even in winter (there's no indoor seating). Fan-favorite flavors and pies are all still here. There are now breakfast items and sandwiches, too, including Eliza Ahearn's famed chicken salad sandwich.

So why not swing by and pick up a fun flavor-infused "Whirly" treat – or a classic kid cone rolled in sprinkles (the choice of the Ahearn children, ages 3 and 5)? Watch Wally's Facebook wall, too, for info on special events. Don't forget, birthday parties are available on-site all year, as well!
