Best Things to Do with Kids in Southeast Michigan This July

There’s always so many fun things to do with kids in southeast Michigan, so how is a busy parent supposed to keep track of it all? With Metro Parent’s list of the best things to do this month, of course!

Here, we’ve researched all of the July fairs and festivals and Fourth of July events that are sure to keep your kids happy and engaged all month long. There are also tons of music in the park and movie in the park events to enjoy with your family.

Here is our curated list of the can’t-miss activities coming to metro Detroit and Ann Arbor in July, 2022. So, what are you waiting for? Take a look at our list and start advance prep for your next family outing.

Sunday Night Concert Series at Lake St. Clair Metropark 

July 3-31, 2022 (Sundays)

Kick back every Sunday evening and listen to cool tunes played live in the park. Musicians range from Big Band to R&B and everything in between. July 3 is Sonic Freeway, July 10 is Yacht Seas, July 17 is KGB, July 24 is Julianne Ankley & the Rogues and July 31 is Bugs Beddow & the Good Stuff.

Movies in the Park at Brandenburg Park 

July 5-26, 2022 (Tuesdays)

Families can bring a chair, or a blanket, and some snacks to see a film in the park. July 5 is Luca, July 12 is Ponyo, July 19 is Dolphin Tale and July 26 is Raya and the Last Dragon.

Symphony by the Shores at Lake St. Clair Metropark 

July 5-26, 2022 (Tuesdays)

Bring blankets, chairs and even a picnic to enjoy while listening to the beautiful sounds of the symphony. Concerts will be held at Thomas Welsh Activity Center. For all ages. July 5 is Dixieland Band, July 12 is Jazz Quartet, July 19 is Woodwind Quintet and July 26 is Brass Quintet.

Music in the Park at Macomb Corners Park

July 7-28, 2022 (Thursdays)

Come for live music, inflatables, games and more at the summertime event at Macomb Corners Park.

Concerts in the Park at Chesterfield Parks and Recreation  

July 8-29, 2022 (Fridays)

Enjoy music in the park along with food trucks available for you to purchase from. Bring your own food and lawn chairs to the concert. July 8 is Sonic Freeway, July 15 is The Meldrum Brothers, July 22 is American Ages and July 29 is Mainstream Drive.

Summer Concert Series at Stony Creek Metropark 

July 8 and 22, 2022

Enjoy the music of metro Detroit bands on Eastwood Beach. For all ages. July 8 is The Chris Canas Band and July 22 is Geff Phillips & Friends.

MEA Music & Cultural Festival 2022

July 9-10 2022

Each year, MEA TV & Radio and the City of Warren bring together Middle Eastern Americans from all over metro Detroit for this cultural experience, which features music, traditional dancing and delicious food.

Music and Movies in the Park at the Civic Center 

July 13-27, 2022 (Wednesdays)

Enjoy pre-show activities like backyard games, food trucks and inflatables. Then, enjoy music and a movie afterwards. July 13 is Weekend Comback and Sing 2. July 20 is Room 13 and The Mitchell’s vs. the Machines. July 27 is Collision Six and Encanto.

Festa Italiana

July 15-17, 2022

Enjoy family fun with an Italian flair including Italian food, live entertainment, kids’ activities, imported beer, contests, a Family Fun Zone and more.

Movies in the Park at Walter and Mary Burke Park 

July 28, 2022

Families can enjoy a story and a movie in the park, courtesy of the MacDonald Public Library. Concessions and a food truck will be on site to purchase.


July 28-30, 2022

Families can check out art on display, get their fill of tasty fair food and spin swing and slide on carnival rides at this annual.

Dinosauria at the Detroit Zoo 

Now-Sept. 5, 2022

The zoo brings you an immersive walk-through experience that will take you back in time to the prehistoric era. Here, you will see 29 life-like animatronic dinosaurs, including a towering, 65-foot-long Brachiosaurus!

Cranbrook on the Green: Artist Designed Miniature Golf at the Cranbrook Art Museum 

Now-Sept. 25, 2022

Visit the new miniature golf course, inspired by the art and design of Cranbrook. There are ten holes for you to practice on. Tickets to the Green include admission to the Art Museum’s galleries.

Michigan Rib Fest

July 1-4, 2022

Find live musical performances, monster truck rides, pig racing, adult beverages and tons of barbecue ribs at this annual fest. 

Royal Oak Taco Fest

Fireworks at Kensington Metropark

Catch a colorful display in the night sky with the whole family at the Kensington Metropark fireworks event. Fireworks begin at dusk.

Independence Fest 

July 2, 2022

Kick off your Fourth of July festivities with live music, a petting zoo, inflatables, rock wall, spray park, stilt-walker, face painting, balloon animals and more. Fireworks will begin at dusk.

M1 Concourse Cars & Coffee | Mopar Day in Pontiac 

July 2, 2022

Join M1 Concourse on the first Saturday of each month for the largest Cars & Coffee event in Michigan! Share this massive monthly tradition with your fellow auto-enthusiasts to showcase their vehicles. This is a kid-friendly event.

Red, White and Blue Nature Hike at Indian Springs Metropark 

July 2, 2022

Enjoy a walk through Indian Springs Metropark to celebrate Independence Day. On the walk, you will visit park wetlands and prairies to look for plants, insects and other parts of the landscape that come in hues of red, white and blue.

Clawson 4th of July Freedom Festival 

July 3-4, 2022

Celebrate the Fourth of July with this massive shebang with live music, food contests, art on display and more. It all leads up to fireworks display at dusk.

Lathrup Village Free Summer Concerts 2022 at Lathrup Village Municipal Park 

July 6-27, 2022 (Wednesdays) 

See some local talents at these outdoor concerts on Wednesday evenings in the summer. Bring your own chair, blanket and picnic meal. July 6 is Nicky T and the Snake Charmers, July 13 is The Grey Cats Band, July 20 is Demetrius Nabors and July 27 is Ollice Cooper 313 Experience.

Movie Night Under the Stars at the Jeanne M. Stine Community Park 

July 6 and 20, 2022

Bring the family, lawn chairs or blankets and relax with a variety of family-friendly movies that are shown at sunset. Concessions will be available for purchase. July 6 is Luca and July 20 is American Underdog — The Kurt Warner Story.

Concert in the Park at Central Park 

July 7-28, 2022 (Thursdays)

Families can enjoy music of all types every Thursday evening in June and July at Central Park. Hot dogs, burgers, ice cream and drinks will be available to purchase.

Oakland County Fair 

July 8-17, 2022

  • Cost: $12/car, $6/motorcycle or walk-ins; Carnival tickets vary by day

This annual hometown attraction features a carnival full of games, rides and arena shows. Also, find a demolition derby, live animals, a circus and more.

Cowboys & Cowgirls Festival

Yeti Fest Art Day – Bigfoot & Sasquatch Soiree

This festival features Yeti-inspired arts and crafts, scavenger hunt, storytelling and music. Kids will be able to create a Sasquatch of their own. Great for all ages.

The Magical Music of Harry Potter at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre

Enjoy the music of Harry Potter like never before with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). Features music from all eight Harry Potter films.

ZooFest ‘A Wild Walk 4 Mental Health’ 

July 10, 2022

This family-friendly event includes a scavenger hunt, bagel breakfast, event t-shirt, music, raffle and other activities. All proceeds benefit our local communities by increasing mental health resources available specifically during, but not limited to, times of crisis. Registration required.

Farmington Founders Festival 

July 14-16, 2022

Celebrate the city of Farmington with a fireworks display, live entertainment, outdoor movies, hot air balloons, monster truck rides and more.

Outdoor Movie Night at Booth Park 

July 15, 2022

Birmingham’s popular outdoor Movie Night series returns to Booth Park on select Friday nights this summer. Bring your own blankets and chairs to see a showing of Home Alone. Pre-show entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m.

Michigan Medieval Faire

A big parade kicks off this Indian cultural fest. There will be live music, free food, Yoga, kid’s activities and more.

Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration at Canterbury Village

Kids Fishing Day at Founders Sports Park

The event will be able to provide each child with everything they need for a successful and safe fishing experience. They will receive their own high-quality rod and reel, stocked tackle box, how-to videos, informational packet and live bait. Pre-registration required.

Orchard Lake Fine Art Show 

July 30-31, 2022

Families can view the work of up to 150 juried and professional artists. This event has been voted one of the top 100 art shows in America for 11 years in a row.

Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights at Palmer Commons 

July 7-28, 2022 (Thursdays)

Arts, entertainment and musical acts are performed at various and separate stages throughout historical downtown Chelsea every Thursday evening. For kids, there will be magicians, jugglers, face painters, balloon artists and more.

Saline Celtic Festival 

July 8-9, 2022

National Ice Cream Day at Hudson Mills Metropark

July 17, 2022

Learn about the history of ice cream and create your own homemade ice cream for National Ice Cream Day. For all ages. Pre-registration is required.

Ann Arbor Art Fair 2022 

July 21-23, 2022

Offers a wide selection of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, glass, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media and more. There will also be live music, sidewalk sales and culinary treats.

Washtenaw County 4-H Youth Show 

July 24-30, 2022

This event showcases the art projects and livestock that have been made and raised by local 4-H kids.

Sounds & Sights Festival

There will be live music at the social tent, car show, farmers market, kid zone, chalk art, art market, food court and more at this annual.

“POPnology” Exhibit Blends Science with Science Fiction at the Michigan Science Center

Friday Night Film’s at New Center Park

This year’s summer series at New Center Park kicks off on June 3. Gates open at 8 p.m. and the movies will start at dusk. Visitors can grab a chair or bring a blanket, enjoy some free popcorn and settle in for a film in the open-air theater.

Saturday Storytime at 27th Letter Books

Michigan Elvisfest

The best professional Elvis tribute artists in North America perform some of The King’s hottest hits at this annual. There are kids’ activities on Saturday, which include games, crafts, balloon-making and face painting.

Plymouth Art in the Park

  • Cost: Free

This annual Michigan favorite fills the downtown area with the work of some 400 artists from across the country. It offers food, music and family activities, too.

Our Big Fat Family Reunion at Willow Metropark

July 9, 2022

There will be live DJs, bounce houses, yard games, hustle/ballroom lessons, live animals, guided hike, 3 on 3 basketball tournament and more. For all ages. Pre-registration required. 

Detroit Kite Festival 

July 10, 2022

  • Cost: $11/car for Michigan residents, $31/car for non-Michigan residents

Head to Belle Isle for this annual kite flying fest. You can bring your own kite or borrow one while you’re there. There will be other activities including food trucks, too. No registration required.

Fun Comedy Magic Show with Gordon the Magician at the Hamtramck Library

Gather the kids and head to the Hamtramck Library for a comedy magic show with Gordon the Magician along with his sidekick, George the Raccoon. Create a “pick me” sign because Gordon will ask for volunteers.

Metro Detroit Youth Day

July 13, 2022

Kids ages 8-15 will enjoy a day full of free games, races and other contests. There’s also live entertainment, celebrity guests and more at this 38-year-old event.

Downtown Wyandotte Street Art Fair
