Ballgame Fun in Detroit, Chicago and Tampa

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team

Sure, tickets for the Detroit Tigers’ April 7 home opener are nearly impossible to come by. But you’re still likely to find seats – plus special events and discounts – for the official Kids Opening Day game on Sunday, April 9 (also against the Red Sox).

Really, though, every game at Comerica Park has children’s fun. As you walk in, make sure to get pictures with one of the oversized tiger sculptures. As the game heads into the seventh inning, stretch those legs and visit the Comerica Carousel, featuring 30 tigers to ride. Or head towards third base to take a turn on the Fly Ball Ferris Wheel with cars shaped like – you guessed it – baseballs. There are also batting cages and speed pitch for little sluggers to boost their own skills.

If you happen to be at a Sunday game, kids under 14 can even run the bases once all the innings are over. Or, on select Friday and Saturday nights, stick around afterwards for dazzling fireworks displays that light up the Detroit skyline.

There are 81 home games this season, which runs into October. For dates and ticket prices, visit detroit.tigers.mlb.com.

Check Out Wrigley’s World Champs

Last season’s big win by the Chicago Cubs ended their infamous World Series curse and catapulted the team’s popularity. But you don’t need a game ticket to visit the storied 103-year-old Wrigley Field. Instead, take a tour. On game days you’ll see the seating bowl, bleachers and field – plus the dugout and press box on non-game days. Time crunched? Snap a shot of your family with the Wrigley marquee behind you hailing the Cubs as champs. The main gate’s sign will probably change after this season – unless, that is, the Cubs win it all again. Daily 75-90-minute tours are $25 (free 2 and under).

Go Where the Pros Train

While you won’t see our Tigers in Tampa now that the season’s starting, there’s still plenty of baseball under the Florida sun. Catch the Tampa Bay Rays or, for an affordable down-home experience, get tickets for the Tampa Yankees instead – the New York Yankees farm team. Sign your kids up to be Baseball Buddies during the game so they can meet players, get autographs and more.
