Beyond Main Beach, the city has many sandy spots to spend your day, whether you want somewhere secluded – or to watch surfers ride the waves. Here are a few to check out.

Aliso County Beach

If you’re into water sports, this beach offers skimboarding, surfing, paddle boarding and more. Kids can hang out in the tot lot or build a sand castle. Try this beach in the evening hours, too. It’s the only beach with fire pits.

Crescent Bay Beach

Body surfers hang out at this large cove. Look toward the north to see Seal Rock in the distance, named for the residents that flock there – sea lions and seals. This beach is popular and on most days can attract 2,000-4,000 visitors.

Treasure Island Beach

This beach is located just north of Aliso County Beach. The large beach offers room to stretch out your towels and umbrellas. It can get crowded on the weekends, so if you’re traveling with little ones, take that into consideration.

Thousand Steps Beach

This well-named beach is at the bottom of 230 steps. You can’t beat the scenery with cliffs as the backdrop. Great for surfing, body surfing and volleyball.

Picnic Beach

Yeah, you can guess what you need to bring here! Also known as Heisler Park, Picnic Beach is the perfect place to enjoy an outdoor meal with your kids. Wait 30 minutes and then hit the beach!

Shaw’s Cove

Known for its tide pools, this beach lets you spot hermit crabs, sea anemones and other curious creatures.
