The best thing moms can do to save time on their tresses is to wash their hair less frequently. Kimberly Miner, who is a senior stylist at Texture 7 Salon & Spa in Brighton and mom to Bryson, age 2, washes her long, naturally curly hair about every three days.
“The first day, I wear it down. The second day is usually its best-looking day, and the third day I usually use a sock bun,” Miner says. (The how-to for that is at the end of this article.)
Put conditioner just on the tips so as not to interfere with your scalp’s natural oils. “Also, invest in a dry shampoo,” says Miner, 29 – a great “between washes” option to give your hair extra bounce and life while curbing oils and odors.
Minding hair care
Like everything in a mom’s life, hair appointments must be carefully choreographed.
“If your salon does confirmation calls the day before, try to pre-book your appointments so that is one less thing you have to remember to do,” Miner suggests. “There is nothing worse than looking in the mirror and realizing you have an inch of new growth and the salon can’t get you in for a week or sometimes two.”
Miner attends the latest hair shows and participates in monthly classes by Paul Mitchell platform artists. She recommends that you ask your stylist to offer a few quick tips that suit your hair best, and keep your eye out for ideas.
“Hair magazines are great for examples, but if you aren’t on Pinterest yet, you should be!” she says. “Clients bring me pictures of styles, cuts and colors from Pinterest all the time.”
It’s always important to pay attention to your hair, Miner adds, “because when you look good, you feel good.”
The sock bun
“It sounds weird, I know,” says Miner, who often turns to a sock bun for a stylish ‘do in a hurry. But the style is perfect because it works for hair of varying lengths.
Here’s what you need:
- An old sock
- Ponytail holder
- Bobby pins
- Hairspray
Take an old sock and cut off the toe (use a white sock for blonde hair; black for dark hair). Roll the sock into a doughnut shape (use longer socks for more volume). Blow-dry your hair with a paddle brush until it’s smooth. Place hair in a ponytail in desired location (a topknot is trendy if you have the length).
Feed the ponytail through center of sock doughnut. Spread your ponytail around the doughnut, wrapping hair around it and tucking edges under the sock. Secure with bobby pins and your favorite hairspray.
“My favorite is Aerogel by Tri,” Miner says.
