Metro Detroit Pools Offering Free Swimming Lessons This Summer

Kids, teens and even adults of all ages can learn to swim for free this summer, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Fund for Youth Sports. 

In 30- to 45-minute lessons, participants learn basic water safety skills, become comfortable in the water and gain an introduction to swimming. Each registered swimmer will receive a swimsuit, swim caps, goggles, a bag and a towel to get them started on their swimming journey. 

The beginner-friendly lessons are ideal for children ages 5 to 13, but any teen or adult who wants to learn is welcome. Any child under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Ready to make some waves? Lessons are still available at six metro Detroit pools. Find one near you and get ready to make a splash! 

Livingston

Ann Arbor YMCA Camp Birkett

• Address: 9141 Dexter Townhall Road, Pinckney

Provided in partnership with the Ann Arbor YMCA, swimming lessons will take place at the beach. Classes are separated by age groups. Registration is now open. 

Macomb

Macomb Family YMCA Pool

• Address: 10 N. River Road, Mount Clemens

Children ages 5-14 can learn to swim at the Macomb YMCA pool. Students must live in one of the following ZIP codes: 48043, 48035, 48036, 48026, 48066 or 48021. Registration is now open. 

Washtenaw

Rutherford Pool

• Address: 975 Congress St., Ypsilanti

Children and adults that live in either the 48197 or 48198 ZIP codes are welcomed to learn at the Rutherford Pool. Lessons begin in June. Interested students must register in person during regular business hours. Visit the pool’s website to learn more about the swim class and swim team offerings.

Wayne

Belle Isle Beach

• Address: 2 Inselruhe Ave., Detroit

Learn to swim at the scenic Belle Isle State Park! Registration is not open yet, but be sure to check the Metroparks website for the latest information.

Brennan Pool

• Address: Rouge Park, 21860 Joy Road, Detroit

Provided in partnership with the City of Detroit and Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, beginner swimmers ages 6 to 17 can learn to swim at Brennan Pool. Registration is now open. 

Wayne County Family Aquatic Center

• Address: 12600 Chandler Park Drive, Detroit

Eight-class sessions are available at Chandler Park. Registration is now open.
