When there’s free time during the weekend, I love to visit some of my favorite stores to hunt for trendy, DIY inspiration. One trend I’ve noticed at stores both big and small is the mini banner. The accessories are usually decorated with a cute logo or image, and often you’ll find them with a motivational saying or word. The banners are fun to decorate a child’s room with or to present to a friend or family member as a gift.
Your child can make his own mini Valentine’s Day banner in honor of the special day. A few basic craft supplies are all you need to get going with this holiday project. Once the basis of the banner is made, it truly is a blank canvas for your children’s imagination to have fun with.
Materials
- Lightweight canvas scraps
- Wooden craft sticks (at least 6-inches long)
- Baker’s twine
- All-purpose glue
- Cotton swabs
- Scissors and pinking shears
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Various craft supplies for embellishments
Instructions
Start out by cutting your canvas into a rectangle that’s 4-inches wide and 6.5-inches long.
Next, apply a thin line of glue in the center of the craft stick. Use a cotton swab to distribute the glue all over the stick.
Line one end of the canvas on top of the glue and press into place. Add another line of glue to the back of the stick and roll the fabric over, once again pressing into place. Let dry.
At this point it’s up to your child to determine how they want the bottom of the banner to look. They could try cutting out a V shape for one or use pinking shears for a straight, crimped edge on the other.
It’s time to decorate! Have fun with stamps, felt stickers and even puffy paint. It’s all about whatever sparks your child’s creativity.
When the decorating is all done (and possibly dry if a sticky substance was used), a long piece of baker’s twine can be added to act as a hanger. Cut a piece longer than you’ll actually need to make tying it into place easier.
Tie on either end of the canvas. Knot the top together to achieve the desired hanging length. Finish it all off by trimming any loose ends.
