Parents, teachers and community members passionate about providing a safe, appropriate, educational environment for teens with Asperger’s syndrome and similar learning styles combined their efforts and Aim High School was born, opening its doors in September 2011. The Middle School was established in 2014 to provide our educational model to students in grades 6-8.
Aim High is a small 6th-12th grade, tuition-based private school that provides an educational alternative where students feel safe and can focus on their education ‒ a place where they are not overwhelmed by the size, noise and social expectations of a large school. We are dedicated to the academic and social success of students with a variety of learning and social abilities and have created a safe, nondiscriminatory environment in which varied learning styles, views and backgrounds are valued.
Our certified teachers deliver an excellent college- and work-ready education that engages students in learning experiences that combine core academics, electives, social and life skills, and health and wellness. We focus on abilities rather than disabilities by building on our students’ strengths. It is our philosophy to meet the students where they are and take them to the next level according to how they learn. Small classes allow our staff to provide personal attention and individualized instruction that addresses each student’s interests, strengths, needs and skills while bringing together classroom concepts and real-world applications. We believe strong teacher-student relationships are key to developing a student’s ability to advocate for themselves.
In addition to preparing each student to meet his or her college and career goals, we believe it is important to be prepared for life outside of academia. A multidisciplinary communication and life skills curriculum builds social skills and awareness. We interweave social instruction, communication training and practical life skills into our curriculum using hands-on learning to develop skills that will be useful for students during their lives after school. At Aim High, we want our students to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
Through a variety of elective offerings, students are able to explore and expand on their creative, technical and physical interests and abilities. We have found that allowing students to express themselves through these avenues encourages growth and confidence to become successful and independent individuals. From drama and digital media to robotics and foreign language, Aim High has something for everyone! To help our students achieve a healthy, balanced lifestyle, we offer a program of health, nutrition and physical education. All students have the opportunity to take this course for the duration of their high school career. Athletics and physical fitness promote a healthy lifestyle and teamwork. Setting and pursuing personal fitness and nutrition goals teach the fundamentals for lifelong wellness.
Our after-school clubs and homework groups help students succeed academically while developing friendships and improving social skills. Teacher-facilitated time provides the opportunity for students to complete homework before they leave for the day. Supervision is available from 3:45-5:30 p.m. each day.
In addition to the academic year, Aim High School offers a four-week Summer Semester and Tech Camp for students to keep mentally and socially active during the summer. Aim High teachers partner with families to provide a unique summer plan based on what each student would like to accomplish. Tech Camp offerings include courses like game programming, 3D modeling, video production, photography, robotics and Arduino. Summer Semester Mornings are designed for academic remediation, credit completion, ACT prep skills and life skills with our certified teachers. Summer Semester Afternoons provide a chance for enjoyable summer activities that build social skills and enhance physical fitness.
The Aim High Transition Program is designed to help students prepare for life after high school ‒ whether that be college enrollment, vocational training or the workforce. New expectations, social situations and personal responsibilities can be overwhelming, so our staff works with parents and students to explore post-secondary options and strives to give students the tools they need to choose the right path for them. In order to assist students with their transition planning, we incorporate a student advisor program, career exploration, dual enrollment options, a transition binder, a senior seminar and a fifth year/transition year into our curriculum.
Our students benefit from an in-house reading specialist, assistive technology and a variety of accommodations to help them remain on the path to success and independence. Our goal is to provide students with the support they need to be successful learners. Whether college or work bound, Aim High School aims to produce graduates with integrity and character ready to lead independent and rewarding lives.
