Towering flowers, giant kids in goggles and even a massive red shark have taken over buildings in Eastern Market. And Sept. 15-23, they’re getting company.
Murals in the Market returns to Detroit for year two with 50 local and traveling artists, all showcasing what they can do in a big way in just one week. They’re each different, but most are bright and colorful – and kids love them.
“A lot of artists last year paid homage to Detroit,” says Roula David, festival director. “Consider it Detroit’s only international art festival.” Its parent company, Detroit-based 1xRUN, is a leading global publisher of fine art prints.
Families can visit the district any time to spy artists in action. It’s all free, too – including a noon-3 p.m. kids art workshop on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Shed 5.
In a fun twist, 1xRUN also wants to break the Guinness world record for the longest art assembly line, where each station adds something to a piece of art. Stay tuned for details. But any festival date is a great time for families to visit the area.
“It’s an exploration of Eastern Market,” says David. “It’s really inspirational for a lot of kids.” Pair it with a stop to Mootown Ice Cream & Dessert Shoppe, bustling Gratiot Central Meat Market and, of course, the ever-popular farmers market.
