To ease the load of preparing for childbirth, some women request the help of a doula. A “doula,” which comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves,” provides unbiased informational, emotional and physical support to the expecting mother. Several doulas obtain their certification to serve through Doulas of North America (DONA) or the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA). Here are a variety of doulas in Michigan’s southeast region.

Some notes about cost: Individual doulas set their own fees, the Doulas of North America International notes. Here in southeast Michigan, birth doulas run $611-$963, and postpartum doulas $24-$35/hour – according to data from DONA trainer Kim James’ popular doulamatch.net website, which lists active doula (she looked at 77 communities in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties). For current pricing and a better sense of services offered, contact individual doulas.
