Labor Day can’t come soon enough this year. After a tumultuous year and an abnormally stressful summer, you’re probably really wanting a peaceful day off.
And the first Monday is September — which is dedicated to the creation to the labor movement and celebrates the achievements of American workers — delivers just that.
Of course, as with everything else this year, we’re betting that your Labor Day celebrations are going to be a bit more low-key than usual.
If you’re trading in a huge celebration in for a smaller intimate gathering at home, this guide has you covered with food, décor, Labor Day activities and more.

The food
Delicious and portable food are key to throwing a great backyard get-together and nothing delivers that like a bit of barbecue. From chicken to burgers and everything in between, you can grill just about anything — and please just about everyone.

The décor
Like a Fourth of July party, Labor Day tends to rock the red, white and blue look (though it’s definitely not the only look that you can do).

The activities
While many of the Labor Day events that you’ve celebrated in year’s past are on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic, there are still plenty of activities that will keep your kids occupied this year.
Our sister magazine, Chicago Parent, suggests setting up an outdoor movie on your day off (you can try a summer classic, like The Sandlot or one of our Watch This, Do That options) or even set up a s’mores bar for the kids.
Missing your favorite events? Arts, Beats and Eats — one of the largest Labor Day events in our area — has gone virtual.
