Shelby Pediatric Associates & Child Lung Center, located in Shelby Township, has been caring for families in the metro Detroit area for more than 30 years. They've served generations of children from their northern Macomb County location Ñ and now, with their new location in Troy, they are reaching a whole new community.
"We opened our office in Troy to service our patients that were flatteringly driving far, as well as to put our footprint in Oakland County," says Dr. Salvatore Ventimiglia, M.D.
Dr. Ventimiglia and senior partner Dr. Bhimsen Rao, M.D., worked together to build this pediatric practice, which has grown to include a diverse staff of 10 providers Ñ men and women who are fluent in languages such as Italian, Arabic, Spanish and Hindi, to name a few Ñ along with two nurse practitioners.
Unlike other pediatric practices Ñ and thanks to Dr. Rao's focus in pediatric pulmonary medicine Ñ Shelby Pediatrics provides specialized care for children with asthma, an ailment that impacts roughly 6 million children under the age of 18, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Patients can undergo complete pulmonary function testing right inside the office.
"We've always had this primary care and specialty type of care," Dr. Ventimiglia says.
And that's a bonus for busy families who don't have the time to take their children to see different specialists for illnesses like asthma.
"We really try to provide as much as we can for the family, for the whole child, under one roof," he says. "It can be inefficient to go here or there in receiving care, so we've always tried to bring people in that could broaden our perspective and are comfortable doing a lot of care independently."
And with the recent addition of a clinical psychologist, Shelby Pediatrics is now able to diagnose children who may be struggling with attention deficits, impulsivity problems or others troubling behaviors using neuropsychological testing, "so we can better treat our patients and have information for our families as soon as we can," Ventimiglia says.
Same-day appointments are offered, too, to help quickly diagnose and treat sick children. Parents can stay up-to-date on their child's health through an online patient portal, and the use of electronic medical records makes it easy for the doctors to access a child's information.
In addition to the specialized care offered at Shelby Pediatrics, the doctors believe in being available for patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week Ñ and that starts when a new patient is born.
"We have made a commitment to see our patients in the hospital," he says, instead of allowing a hospital physician to meet new moms, dads and their babies. "There is a certain relationship that I think you create when you're in the hospital, he adds, and, "pediatrics is so relationship based, we would find it remiss to not be there from day zero for our patients."
And that's why the physicians at Shelby Pediatrics become like family to their patients. "I've been called the surrogate grandparent in so many ways," he says.
Shelby Pediatric's Shelby Township office, which is located on 22 Mile Road, is open until 6 p.m. on Monday, 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.
