When an older adult makes the decision to move out of their home and into a specially designed senior living environment, Trinity Health Senior Communities can provide them with all of the amenities they need at a price they can afford. Affiliated with St. Joseph Mercy Health System, the Trinity Health Senior Communities are located throughout metro Detroit.
"We are nonprofit based, which means that when we manage our facilities and make decisions about our communities, it's with our residents in mind," says Katie Klossner, marketing communications manager for Trinity Health Senior Communities. Trinity Health Senior Communities is also faith-based, she adds. While residents don't have to be active in a particular denomination, it drives the guiding principles of the organization.
Trinity Health Senior Communities is a very large organization, the sixth largest among non-profit senior communities in the nation, but Christopher Caserta, vice president of marketing, says that does not mean the senior care is one-size-fits-all.
"We have variety in size and scale between our facilities and are able to accommodate almost all seniors. We have different levels of cost and different levels of care available," Caserta says. Some of the facilities are acute care, while others are more like all-inclusive, resort-style or apartment-style living.
Trinity Health Senior Communities offers several different housing options, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care Support, HUD Affordable Apartments, along with Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facilities. Somewhat unique within the senior living industry are their Life Plan Communities, which incorporate several different housing options. Klossner says these life plan communities offer resort-style independent living, and as the needs of a resident changes, can then provide assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing.
"As their care needs progress, or as their medical states change, they can move about within the community," Klossner says. "They don't have to uproot and go to a whole new facility somewhere else."
Each community offers a robust health and wellness program, Caserta says, provided free of charge to residents. The programs are designed to keep the residents active Ñ physically and mentally. There are also off-site trips to community festivals, museums and even prearranged shopping trips so residents don't need to drive or go alone. Residents also dine on chef-prepared, award-winning food at all of the Trinity Health Senior Communities.
It's a common misconception that senior living facilities are too expensive for most people to afford, Caserta says.
"When we look at the current cost of living, whether in a house or apartment, and you look at the maintenance of that, food costs, utilities, etc., and compare that to the total cost of most senior communities, it's usually about even. We want to serve as many seniors as we can, so we price accordingly," says Caserta.
Caserta says Trinity Health Senior Communities is also looking at the way seniors use technology and how innovative integrations can be used to make their senior living experiences even easier. Trinity Health Senior Communities is piloting voice recognition programs, like Amazon Alexa and Google Home, transportation on demand, and apps that residents are used to having in their everyday life.
"We've definitely seen a shift in public perspective when it comes to senior living facilities. Once they see these communities, it isn't what they were anticipating. There are so many positives about it," says Caserta.
"Research shows the health and wellness of the resident increases. They are getting better nutrition, stimulated mentally and physically, and they don't have to worry about getting out and driving in the snow and ice," Caserta says. The communities bring a lot of comfort to family members as well, he adds. "You can stay a family member. You don't have to be a caregiver. It lets you continue to be a family member while your loved one gets the care they need."
