Across the Board Exhibit at Shalom Street

When you think of Jewish games, your first thought might be a dreidel – the popular spinning top associated with Hanukah. But how about video games? Or dolls? That’s exactly what southeast Michigan kids can discover at Across the Board From Dreidel to Xbox: The Toys and Games of the Jewish People, at Shalom Street in West Bloomfield from June 16, 2014 until Aug. 14, 2015.

This interactive, hands-on new installation features a variety of toys and games for youngsters of all ages. Kids can try out their skill in the electronic arcade, or let their imaginations run wild in the world of make believe by acting out plays full of dragons and princesses.

There’s plenty to play with and learn about, from dreidels and the Xbox to Barbies, baseball and board games. You’ll find lots of cool spaces, too, including a Maccabees cave and a Jewish temple. While they’re exploring, children also find out about Judaism’s important role in the industry – especially incorporating play into holiday celebrations.

Across the Board offers a great mix of fun and education. And its hands-on activities can inspire kids to participate in – and learn from – Jewish values and fun. Hours for June to August are as follows (be sure to check ahead for possible seasonal changes!):

  • Mondays-Thursdays: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sundays: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Entry and activities are free for all kids who attend. Shalom Street is located at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
