How to Make Birthday Cake Cones for Your Child’s Party

Looking for a party cake alternative? Parents will cheer for this cool, low-mess recipe that bakes up yummy cake into ice cream cones.

Kds love ice cream cones and they adore birthday cake. So, for your child’s next big shindig, why not mash up the two with a neat little surprise sure to impress them and their pint-sized guests?

This recipe for birthday cake cones – a favorite that my mom used to make – indeed combines both concepts by baking individual birthday cakes into ice cream cones. Topped with icing and embellishments, each birthday cake cone looks just an ice cream cone. But that’s not the only perk to this clever creation.

For one thing, kids can lick away without worrying about sticky melting drips (a boon for whoever’s on clean-up patrol, too). Plus, moms and dads can forgo the paper plates and plastic forks thanks to these handheld treats.

Trot out these tricky treats at your next party. They’re a classic sure-hit with kids.

Ingredients

  • 1 cake mix (any flavor you – make that, your kid! – likes)
  • 30 flat-bottom ice cream cones
  • 2 cups prepared frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • Sprinkles, M&M’s or other candy toppings

Directions

  1. Prepare cake mix according to package instructions.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 F.
  3. Spoon two tablespoons of cake batter into each cone. Place cones in the cups of a muffin pan or on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  5. Cool completely.
  6. Frost with frosting and decorate with the candy embellishments. Perhaps pipe on some icing, too; perhaps the celebrant’s age? Have the kids help with this part. It’s loads of fun!
