Detroit resident Zoe Burrell is stepping into the spotlight this month as Deloris Van Cartier in Groves High School’s production of “Sister Act.” A standout student in the Groves Performing Arts Company, Burrell brings heart, humor and powerhouse vocals to the role of a nightclub singer who goes undercover in a convent after witnessing a crime.
Her performance anchors a joyful, high-energy show filled with laughter, gospel-style music and big-hearted moments. Through spirited choreography, soulful songs and a story rooted in sisterhood and belonging, “Sister Act” promises a feel-good celebration of community and connection — Detroit-style.

Finding her light
Burrell started acting in middle school and has taken part in productions of “The Little Mermaid” and “Chicago.” Despite being relatively new to theater, her love for being on stage inspired her to pursue further roles at Groves.
She credits her positive experiences to John Rutherford, director of theatre.
“He helped me shape my love for theatre. He has a way of pulling out the hidden talents in each actor. He sees their abilities, strengths and weaknesses,” said Burrell.
With his guidance and the perseverance of her cast, she feels confident in the show’s success.
From character to connection
In her personal life, Burrell has found a deeper connection with her character. Growing up, Burrell experienced bullying from her peers and struggled with feeling like an outsider. With low confidence and little community, she relied on her family for support and personal growth.
“This role as Deloris Van Cartier describes the journey from being just a common person into someone with value and worth. The sense of community the Nuns showed her helped her to grow and realize who she was,” said Burrell.
She especially loves performing the songs “Fabulous Baby” and “Sister Act,” musical numbers focusing on growth and community. Like Deloris, Burrell’s family helped her unlock her true potential and gain confidence in her sense of self.
Embracing the role
Burrell’s role as Deloris is demanding and ever-changing. Despite this challenge, she sees her character’s multifaceted personality as one of the best components of the role.
One of her favorite parts of the show is bringing these characters to life and improving her own acting skills through her role.
With over 200 lines of script to memorize and numerous song and dance numbers, Burrell’s dedication is on full display.
A future in theatre
Burrell hopes that guests will recognize the hard work of each cast and crew member who has dedicated time to making the show a success. Through music, laughter and her character’s transformation, she hopes the audience discovers the real meaning of sisterhood.
After graduation, she hopes to attend the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance to “create memorable moments, as a performer, and never stop growing, learning and singing.”
