Michigan School Rating Results Released

The Michigan Department of Education's Michigan School Index System grades based on overall student performance. The most recent results are in. How did your child's school do?

How well do you think your child’s school is doing compared to others? If you’re like a lot of Michigan parents, you’re probably not sure. After all, there are a lot of schools in Michigan, and the school ranking system can be a bit hard to follow.

In order to nix some of that confusion, the Michigan Department of Education overhauled its top-to-bottom school ranking system, which gave a percentile ranking based on where each school falls on a list, and replaced it with the Michigan School Index System, which gives each school a numerical score from zero to 100, MLive reported in 2018.

To calculate this number, each school is scored in six areas: improvement on state exams, student proficiency on state exams, if the school offers art, music, library and gym classes, graduation rates, how well English learners do on state exams and how many students are tested.

A percentage of each of these areas, 34, 29, 14, 10, 10 and 3 percent, respectively, make up the final number. Any schools that score below 30 need improvement.

If you’re wondering where your child’s school falls in this ranking system, the Michigan Department of Education released the results for the 2017-18 school year, and Metro Parent compiled the five top and five bottom ranked schools in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. If your child’s school isn’t on the list, check out the 2017-18 Accountability Master Results File on Michigan.gov.

Please note that this system isn’t foolproof and some schools may appear higher or lower on the list based on a lack of data. For example, a school may rank 90 in graduation rates and have no data for any other area, giving the school a 90. Likewise, a school might earn a zero score for extracurriculars and have no data in any other area, which would earn the school a zero.

For these reasons, we have opted not to list schools at zero or 100 when the majority of categories had no data. Instead, we have listed them with a disclaimer.
