In metro Detroit, a growing number of families are turning to free and low-cost tutoring programs to help their children catch up or get ahead academically. Whether it’s reading, math or creative writing, these programs are making a real difference, particularly for underserved communities facing educational disparities that widened during the pandemic.
Fortunately, local nonprofits, school districts and community centers have stepped up to offer academic support that’s both accessible and impactful. Here’s a closer look at some of the most effective tutoring initiatives available to Metro Detroit families.
Free Tutoring Options
Tutored by Teachers
Led by certified educators in small group settings, “Tutored by Teachers” focuses on boosting reading comprehension and fluency. Sessions run in multi-week blocks and are free to students enrolled in the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
St. Vincent & Sarah Fisher Center
For elementary school students in grades 1–6, SVSF provides individualized tutoring in reading and math. Sessions are held after school during the academic year and continue through the summer. In addition to academic instruction, SVSF programs include enrichment activities and field trips – all completely free of charge.
Detroit Educational Takeover
This grassroots initiative offers no-cost math tutoring to K–8 students. The program focuses on building foundational skills, supporting homework and offering test preparation. Tutors are volunteers from the community and nearby universities.

Low-Cost Tutoring Programs
Beyond Basics
Founded by education advocate Pamela Good, Beyond Basics provides intensive one-on-one reading tutoring across more than 50 Michigan locations. The organization works closely with public schools to help students gain up to two grade levels in reading in just six weeks.
InsideOut Literary Arts
Geared toward students interested in creative expression, InsideOut offers free writing and poetry workshops both in and outside of schools. Their “Writers-in-Residence” program brings local poets and authors directly into classrooms to help students build voice and confidence through writing.
Soar Detroit
Designed for students in grades 2–5, Soar Detroit provides intensive, one-on-one reading tutoring. Families pay a modest fee of $35/month for the first child and $25/month for each additional child. Most participants advance more than two grade levels in a single year.
