Metro Detroit is full of great places to raise a family, but is there a best suburb?
There is if you ask Niche, a website offering rankings and statistics on towns, schools and colleges. Its recently-released 2015 Best Suburbs to Raise a Family offers a look at the best places for people with kids to call home based on a variety of factors.
Narrowed down to the best suburbs in the metro Detroit area (and a bit beyond), Birmingham took the top spot as the No. 1 best suburb for families, and several other Oakland County communities also placed in the top 10 along with cities in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties.
How’d they choose? Niche ranked suburbs based on age demographics, school ratings, crime rates, and access to affordable housing, childcare, libraries and grocery stores.
“A high ranking indicates that a suburb attracts young families with good schools and a safe community,” the site states. You can find the full methodology here.
Here are the top 20 suburbs on the list. A total of 86 communities are ranked, so find your town on the full list here.

Troy should be number 1 on this list. None of these places have schools as good as Troy.
