Socially Distant Outdoor Classes in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor

COVID-19 may have put indoor classes on hold but these local organizations stepped up and got creative to offer socially distant outdoor classes in our area.

Are you missing your favorite classes? We’re all craving our hobbies and the sense of normalcy that has been missing since March, but we’re still not in a position to get completely back to life before the ‘Rona.

That doesn’t mean we can’t compromise though, and there are some local organization that have stepped out of the box to offer some of your favorite activities outside and at a proper social distance.

Take a look at our list to find some martial arts, physical fitness, painting and more socially distant outdoor classes near you and take the whole family (or just yourself) and enjoy an afternoon.

Outdoor Yoga with Citizen’s Yoga

Outdoor Martial Arts with Champion Martial Arts

Master Ron takes his martial arts expertise outside to offer Krav Maga, Tae Kwon Do and more martial arts classes for all ages.

Outdoor Yoga with Blue Moon Wild

  • Location: Various locations in the Ann Arbor area

Get your stretch on with 30-minutes of various kinds of Yoga. Bring your own mat, water, sunglasses, towel and sunscreen. Masks are not required but classes will be socially distanced.

Outdoor Painting Classes by On the Gogh Studio

Sign up for an all-level painting class and try your hand creating a unique scene featuring sea turtles. Watch out for other classes, too.

Parking Lot Pop-Up Barre Classes with Pure Barre

  • Location: Pure Barre Rochester (439 S. Main St., Suite 150) and Pure Barre Shelby Township (13456 24 Mile Road) parking lots

These early morning Barre classes will get your blood pumping and help you start your day off energized.

Family Karate Class with PKSA Karate Detroit

  • Location: Beacon Park, 1901 Grand River Ave, Detroit

Work on your karate skills and self-defense techniques at this outdoor class. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Spots are limited. Masks are required. Next class is on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2020.

Fitness Circuit Class at Dodge Park

  • Location: Dodge Park, 40620 Utica Road, Sterling Heights
  • Date: Sundays through Oct. 25, 2020
  • Time: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $25

Certified personal trainer, Stephen Lee, hosts these small circuit classes at the park. Bring your own mat, water and towel. Expect multiple exercise stations with a variety of light and vigorous exercises that last 3-4 minutes.

Baby Goat Yoga by Youngblood Vineyard

  • Location: Youngblood Vineyard, 61829 Ray Center Road, Ray Township

This socially-distant “no contact” class with a certified Yoga instructor will help you unwind with some basic Yoga poses and cuddles with baby goats. Each ticket includes one wine tasting.

Outdoor Art with Payton Cook Art

Local artist Payton Cook presents outdoor art classes this fall. Choose from acrylic painting, outdoor sketching, oil painting or sketches for kids. Kids classes are online. First session is held outdoors. Second session to be held inside.
