First Aid Certification and CPR Classes in Metro Detroit

The best way to help your child in an emergency is to be prepared. Taking CPR courses could save the life of your own kids – or someone you know. Register for the CPR course nearest you to gain the knowledge and skills to help in a cardiac or breathing emergency.

Metro Parent has found a variety of options hosted by respected medical/safety groups, organizations and training companies in metro Detroit, the greater Ann Arbor area and beyond.

Many offer a popular Friends & Family CPR course (which is for the general public – i.e., you don’t need it for your job) and Hands-Only CPR options. For those seeking certification, Heartsaver is a common program (all three are American Heart Association programs).

American Heart Association

  • Locations: various; throughout Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties
  • Ages/types of classes: Friends & Family CPR, Heartsaver certification course
  • Cost: varies
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

The American Heart Association continuously offers Friends & Family CPR courses. In this program, you will learn adult Hands-Only CPR, adult automated external defibrillator (AED) use, child CPR, infant and adult CPR, and child and infant choking relief. This course is led by video and includes skill practice throughout. The Friends & Family course does not provide a course completion card; it does offer a participation card upon completion. The American Heart Association also provides other courses in CPR and AED that may fit your needs if your job requires a certification. Can’t take a course right away? American Red Cross

  • Locations: Detroit, Warren, Troy, Ann Arbor, Howell and other locations
  • Ages/types of classes: first aid, CPR, AED for lay responders
  • Cost range: $70-$110/person, on average
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

Its adult and pediatric first aid/CPR/AED course offers students the knowledge necessary to recognize and care for a variety of first aid issues – as well as how to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies. This course will teach you the skills you need to help adult and pediatric victims. These courses are offered in an onsite format or in a blended format including online and onsite. The web portion must be completed prior to the in-person part. (Note: Red Cross also offers a BLS/CPR course for professional rescuers and health care providers.)

Advantage First Aid

  • Locations: 43155 Main St., Suite 2212B, Novi; plus training locations in Commerce Township and Livonia
  • Ages/types of classes: Heartsaver certification program, CarePlus CPR courses and more
  • Cost: varies by class
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

Advantage First Aid Training and Safety, LLC offers a variety of CPR and First Aid programs for various ages. American Heart Association courses, including the Heartsaver certification program, are offered in addition to CarePlus and other classes that include certification.

Beaumont Health

  • Locations: Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Taylor, Dearborn and other locations
  • Ages/types of classes: Family & Friends CPR, Hands-Only CPR, Heartsaver CPR with AED
  • Cost: $30/Family & Friends, $50/Heartsaver
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

The Friends & Family CPR course teaches adult Hands-Only CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child automated external defibrillator (AED) use, infant CPR, and relief of choking in an adult, child or infant. The American Heart Association course is offered in a group setting. (Note: This course is ideal for those over age 12. This course is for those who do not need a course completion card in CPR.) Need to be certified? The Heartsaver AED course teaches infant, child and adult CPR, including signs of a heart attack, stroke, difficulty breathing and how to use an AED. It provides successful participants with AHA certification cards.

Crittenton Hospital in Rochester

  • Locations: Crittenton Hospital Medical Center, 1101 W. University Drive, Rochester
  • Ages/types of classes: Friends & Family CPR, PALS provider renewal, CPR healthcare provider renewal, Heartsaver CPR with AED
  • Cost: $29/Friends & Family, $75/CPR healthcare provider, $89/Heartsaver
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

Crittenton offers a Friends & Family CPR class that teaches you how to perform CPR on adults, kids and infants – and help someone who is choking. This class is aimed at those who want to be prepared in an emergency but don’t need certification for employment. Crittenton also offers Heartsaver courses for those who need a certificate for work.

Health Education Strategies, LLC

  • Locations: 11460 Telegraph Road, Taylor
  • Ages/types of classes: Friends & Family CPR class, Heartsaver certification program and more
  • Cost: varies by class
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

American Heart Association courses are offered including Friends & Family CPR, which teaches students how to perform CPR on adults, children and infants. Heartsaver CPR, PALS program and other classes are offered.

Henry Ford Health System in West Bloomfield

  • Locations: Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, 6777 W. Maple Road, West Bloomfield
  • Ages/types of classes: infant CPR
  • Cost: $40/couple
  • Schedule (typically): year-round

Henry Ford offers an infant CPR class that teaches parents and other caregivers how to handle a life-threatening emergency. This is an American Heart Association skills class and does not provide certification. It is part of the hospital’s New Moms Class Series.

Rochester Hills Fire Station

  • Location: Rochester Hill Fire Department No. 1, 1111 Horizon Court, Rochester Hills
  • Ages/types of classes: Friends & Family CPR, all ages; CPR with AED (with certification card), and Heartsaver certification program
  • Cost: free/Friends & Family class, $45/CPR with AED for non-residents, $35/Heartsaver for non-residents
  • Schedule (typically): periodically throughout year

The Friends & Family CPR course teaches you life-saving skills by using a lecture, videos and practice on a CPR manikin. You will receive an American Heart Association participation card upon completion of the class. The Friends & Family class is suitable for all ages. The fire department also offers a CPR, AED and First Aid course and Heartsaver CPR class, both offering certification card upon completion.

Southfield Fire Department

  • Location: Southfield Civic Center, 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield
  • Ages/types of classes: teens and adults; Heartsaver class with certification card
  • Cost: $30
  • Schedule (typically): periodically throughout year

This Heartsaver course offers training in CPR, AED and first aid for adults, children and infants. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive their certification card. The card is good for two years.

St. Joseph Mercy Health System

  • Locations: St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, 5301 McAuley Drive, Ypsilanti
  • Ages/types of classes: Family & Friends CPR; suitable for ages 15-plus (ages 13-15 may register with an adult)
  • Cost: $35/person
  • Schedule (typically): monthly

This Friends & Family CPR course will teach you basic lifesaving CPR skills. The course covers infant, child and adult CPR and AED use. This course does not offer certification. CPR Heartsaver AED program includes a Heartsaver CPR book and two-year certification card.

University of Michigan in Ann Arbor

  • Locations: 401 Washtenaw, 3064 CCRB (class meets outside of this room), Ann Arbor
  • Ages/types of classes: certification in American Red Cross Adult/Child CPR/AED and First Aid
  • Cost: $45/person
  • Schedule: periodically throughout the year

Morning adult and child CPR/AED and first aid courses are open to the community throughout the year. Successful participants receive certification cards, valid for two years. Consult the current schedule online for the latest.
