Kids Rehab in Macomb
Macomb County youth have a new resource for physical/occupational therapy, language pathology and social work: the Beaumont Children’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Center.
Manjula Amarnath, Beaumont’s system director of pediatric rehabilitation services, says opening here was key since many parents from the area had been driving their kids to Royal Oak and Grosse Pointe for services.
“We wanted to be strategically located for the convenience of the families to get services closer to home,” she says. The new 6,616-square-foot facility has seen more than 200 children since opening in April.
The center has separate gyms for sensory integration, gross and fine motor skills, plus a pool for aquatic-based therapy, a casting room and several private treatment rooms. There’s an observation room for parents, too.
“It’s a very unique and customized treatment provided for any kind of diagnoses or conditions that may be brought in,” Amarnath says.

Psych Care in Ann Arbor
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is now home to an improved pediatric inpatient psychiatric option. With 16,000 square feet and 16 beds, the Nyman Family Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness has 12 private rooms with space for a parent to stay overnight, a sensory room, a Michigan-themed gym and colorful group spaces.
It’s one of a limited number of youth psychiatric facilities in Michigan that can accept patients with a co-occurring medical illness. Rooms have views of the Nichols Arboretum and kids have access to art and other therapeutic activities.
“A safe, warm and pleasant healing environment is so critical to recovery from psychiatric disorders,” says Dr. Ben Biermann, child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient director, in a press release. Since April, the space has allowed his staff “to treat our patients in a beautiful, state-of-the-art setting designed to foster mental wellness and promote healing.”
