Academic Adventures for Macomb Families
Farmers Markets
Shopping can be a learning experience. Not only can you teach your kids about where their food comes from, but getting them involved in the experience will help introduce them to new fruits and veggies to try. Cash is still a popular form of payment at farmers markets, so you can have your child count out the money and pay for the items themselves. Some farmers markets even have activities to do, such as crafts for kids.
Public Art
Macomb County has so many different murals, sculptures and paintings throughout the cities and every year they seem to add more. If you have a child that is interested in art, this might be right up their alley. View the Make Macomb Your Home’s public art map to find all of the spots. Also, look at the map and find all of the Inside|Out 2025 spots in Macomb County where you can view paintings up close from May to October.
LegaSea Aquarium & The Repatarium
Families can visit this hands-on interactive indoor aquarium and zoo in Macomb County. It offers daily shows about reptiles, sharks, stingrays, snakes and more. They also have a mammal experience that you can purchase tickets to for $30, where you’ll be able to get up close with a two-toed sloth, the capybara and binturong. There are plenty of photo opportunities and your kids won’t even realize they’re actually learning while they’re there.
Libraries
Macomb County has 25 libraries for families to check out together. If you’re looking for something free to do that will keep your children occupied for a while, then the library is a good place to start. Most libraries will have a checklist of recommended books for each age or grade level if you’re not sure what to check out. You can also check out our list of 12 Must-Read Book for Kids, which we have also organized by grade level, or book suggestions from the Macomb Intermediate School District, conveniently organized by category.
Metroparks
There are three Metroparks for families to visit in Macomb County – Lake St. Clair Metropark, Stony Creek Metropark and Wolcott Mill Metropark. There are so many new things that families can enjoy together in the great outdoors at these Metroparks. Lake St. Clair Metropark and Stony Creek Metropark both have nature centers to check out. Wolcott Mill Metropark has a farm where you can get up close and learn about the animals. All three have an abundance of events to check out and learn new things throughout the year.
Museums
If you have a history-loving child, then one of the Historical Society museums in Macomb County may be a good idea. The Discovery Center of Macomb is a children’s science museum that has a lot of great events happening on the weekends. Visit the Michigan Transit Museum to see trains and Selfridge Military Air Museum to see planes. Go to the Jack Frost Museum to see classic cars on display.
Nature Centers
Spend the day out in nature or inside a nature center if the weather isn’t cooperating that day. The centers offer plenty of educational programs and events to keep your children busy. Most have nature story times, guided hikes on the outdoor trails, animals and informative displays to read to learn more.
Orchards and Cider Mills
Macomb County has a bunch of orchards and cider mills, which all offer different learning opportunities. I always liked to go to Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill when I was younger to see the process of apple cider being made. A lot of the orchards have u-pick options where you can go out in the field to see how the fruits and vegetables are grown, pick them and take them home with you. It’s also always a learning opportunity at Westview Orchards, where co-owner Katrina Roy, tells us she speaks to the little visitors all about farming and agriculture while they’re there.
