University of Michigan’s public art spaces

The University of Michigan campus is home to several stunning public art pieces, as well as the University of Michigan’s Museum of Art, offering a wonderful opportunity to introduce your kids to the world of sculpture and design.

Wave Field

Wave Field is a large-scale interactive sculpture designed by artist Maya Lin, famous for designing the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The piece features rolling hills of grass that mimic the motion of ocean waves. Kids can run through the “waves,” climb the rolling hills and immerse themselves into the installation.

Cubes in Seven Axes

Created by artist Tony Rosenthal, this sculptural installation features three large metal cubes arranged at different angles. Kids can enjoy climbing on and around the cubes, exploring the way the angular shapes change as they move around them. It’s a fantastic spot that offers a more hands-on experience with contemporary art.

Anchors

Anchors, by artist Jim Sanborn, features two large, abstract representations of anchors. The geometric shapes and heavy, industrial materials will intrigue kids interested in shapes, texture and how art can transform everyday objects into something new and fun.
