Fun Grand Rapids Museums for Your Family to Visit

Museums offer lots of family fun on visits to Grand Rapids. You can even plan a whole trip around your favorites. We share some recommendations.

Museums make a city unique — and Grand Rapids has some of the best. Plan to visit at least one on your family road trip. Here, we share our favorites for your family to experience.

Grand Rapids Children’s Museum is a place your kids will love

The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum is a fusion of fun and learning. Children can unleash their inner scientist in the STEAM Lab, embark on a culinary adventure in the Kidstruction Zone or dive into a world of make-believe in the Imagination Laboratory.

Be sure to check out the regular programming that includes toddler time, open paint, plus installations from resident artists. There’s also low-sensory programming to calm and refresh your little ones. We love the colorful VW Bug made accessible for kids to pretend drive. This is a great photo opportunity!

Toni R.’s Yelp review of the GRCM says, “I love taking my family here. I remember when the building was first opened back in the 90’s. So glad that I get to continue to have a great experience there. It’s always clean and organized. The staff are always so friendly and smiling.”

Visit Grand Rapids Art Museum to learn why art is so important

Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) is a hub of artistic expression within a city that cherishes the arts. GRAM believes that art is not a luxury but a necessity.

GRAM is considered an educational institution and offers a diverse range of exhibitions, events, and educational initiatives cater to a wide spectrum of interests and audiences. What a great way to introduce your kids to art!

Learn history and culture at Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives

The Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives (GRAAMA) is located in the heart of the city. This museum celebrates the rich and diverse history, culture and contributions of African Americans in the Grand Rapids community. On Facebook, Aaminah Shakur says, “GRAAMA both celebrates Black achievement and looks at the struggles that have been or still need to be overcome. A great resource for all ages to learn Black history and culture, including local Black history, and how it ties into our current realities.”

Through engaging exhibits, artifacts and archival materials, visitors can explore the stories that have shaped the city’s African American community over the years. Be sure to find out about any special programming before your visit.

Grand Rapids Public Museum is great for kids, too!

Explore the city’s rich heritage at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, where history, science, and culture mix. From interactive displays to hands-on activities, your family will explore life in the past and learn awe-inspiring artifacts.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum offers an engaging and educational experience to delight visitors of all ages. In a Tripadvisor review, KV says, “Great, kid friendly place to learn about Grand Rapids and the surrounding area. The planetarium was awesome too. My two kids ages 8 and 11 enjoyed it.”
