4 best picks for families during spring break in Kalamazoo

1. Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum

For an exciting mix of history and hands-on learning, the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum is a perfect stop. This Smithsonian-affiliated museum is home to interactive exhibits, flight simulators and an impressive collection of restored aircraft.

Spring break often brings special programs, like rocket-building workshops and live science demonstrations. The best part? Many of the rides and exhibits are indoors, making it an excellent choice if the weather is chilly or rainy.

2. Kalamazoo Mall

One of the most charming spots in town, the Kalamazoo Mall is the first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in the U.S. and remains a hub for unique boutiques, cozy coffee shops and locally owned stores.

Enjoy free admission on April 19, 2025, and several astronomical observing sessions in March-May, including eclipse watches.

4. Bell’s Eccentric Café

Kalamazoo is known for its beer scene, and Bell’s Eccentric Café is a must-visit for craft beer lovers and foodies alike. While parents can enjoy a pint of Oberon, a seasonal wheat beer that’s released every spring, the café also has a delicious menu featuring locally sourced ingredients.

  1. Embrace Kalamazoo’s craft beverage scene: Kalamazoo also has an impressive craft beverage scene beyond beer, and many locations are family-friendly. Stop by Water Street Coffee Joint for locally roasted coffee or Green Door Distilling Co. for unique craft spirits.
  2. Prepare for both outdoor and indoor exploring: Spring weather in Kalamazoo can be unpredictable, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring layers, along with an umbrella, just in case.
  3. Experience Kalamazoo’s live music and theater scene: Kalamazoo has a thriving arts and music culture, too.
