Hot Family Food Trends for 2013

In 2012, gluten-free diets were top on the list of food trends, along with local produce, Greek yogurt and simple cooking techniques. What kind of food trends will make 2013 memorable? This is what food insiders are predicting.

Beyond Chipotle

The Food Network believes that the New Year will bring a quest for more varieties of chili peppers. Now that chipotle and jalapeno peppers are common, it’s time to discover different kinds of chiles. Have a tall glass of milk ready!

Cauliflower Heyday?

Kale was the vegetable du jour in 2012; not so for 2013. Instead, the foodies behind Epicurious say that cauliflower will be the next “hot” vegetable – especially as the main part of the dish, not just a side.

Fancy Pub Food

Food & Wine anticipates that pub food will become a new phenomenon at restaurants. Expect to see Asian sliders and other infusion flavors on the menu. Thai sloppy Joes, anyone?

Top Snack? Popcorn

Popcorn will be the trendy snack of 2013, according to Huffington Post’s Kitchen Daily. You’ll probably be seeing more recipes that dress up this humble whole grain.

Say Quinoa

Eating Well magazine believes you’ll be eating more quinoa in 2013. The superfood is packed with protein in each little bite. And don’t be fooled: Quinoa isn’t pasta; it’s more like a seed or even a vegetable.

Season for Sourness

Cooking Light foresees that sour will be the flavor that rules 2013. Tart, acidic flavors will be available in everything from candies to entrees, pickled side dishes to kimchi-topped hotdogs. Pucker up!
