Detroit Toy Stories at Detroit Historical Museum

Every kid loves toys – but now there's something in it for parents, too! Take the entire family to the Detroit Toy Stories exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum, running now till Sept. 12, 2012, and have a nostalgic look at the toys that moms and dads used to write on their holiday wish lists.

There are over 7,000 items in the collection – sponsored by the Detroit Historical Society Guild – that allow the whole family to revisit some of the most memorable playthings from multiple generations of southeast Michigan children.

Old games, dollhouses, pedal cars, hula-hoops, toy soldiers and slinky pups all help to make this collection a timeless classic.

Videos of vintage wind-up toys and original toy commercials help to tell the story of historic pastimes. Personal accounts from a variety of metro Detroiters are incorporated into the exhibit to show the history of the city that made these toys part of a culture. There are several "play stations" throughout the exhibit inviting all ages to sit down and play games that have stood the test of time. Who doesn't still love the game Operation, Etch A Sketch, Slinky or – most classic of all – checkers?

Tickets to the museum cost $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $4 for kids (ages 5-17). Children under age 4 and students with a valid ID are free!

The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
