Egyptian Death Dogs Exhibit at Kelsey Museum in Ann Arbor

Before pooches like Snoopy, Pluto and Scooby-Doo hit the scene, there were Anubis, Wepwawet and Duamutef – a tag team of dog-like creatures who were pretty popular with ancient Egyptians.

Discover the mysteries behind these jackal-headed gods at Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, one of the great museums in Ann Arbor, Feb. 6-May 3, 2015 during Death Dogs: The Jackal Gods of Ancient Egypt.

Don’t let the words “death dogs” scare you: The term simply refers to the important role these mythical beings played during death and the afterlife. And, in fact, many are still a part of today’s popular culture – often seen in action figures, video games, movies and cartoons.

This exhibit traces the origins of these gods, featuring about 40 artifacts – some never before displayed, including statues, paintings, amulets and other objects. Your family can also explore through tours, performances, toys and games. While this spot might not be the first to pop to mind when it comes to an Ann Arbor kids museum, it definitely caters to families looking for a unique experience!

In particular, mark your calendar for “Family Day: Mummies,” happening 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. Highlights for this event include:

  • Special gallery tours illuminating the ancient Egyptians’ world
  • A special library corner where kids learn about Egyptian gods
  • Mummy-themed arts and crafts and hands-on activities for kids

Regular hours are as follows:

  • Tuesdays-Fridays: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Saturdays-Sundays: 1-4 p.m.
  • Closed Mondays and holidays

In Ann Arbor with kids? Give it a try! Death Dogs: The Jackal Gods of Ancient Egypt runs Feb. 6-May 3, 2015 at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.
