AWAKE! Princess Stage Show for Kids in West Bloomfield

Waiting around for Prince Charming to whisk you off your feet? Well, princess, you'd better wake up – and take the reins yourself! That's the spirit of new family stage show AWAKE!, presented by Two Muses Theatre at its Barnes & Noble theater space in West Bloomfield Saturdays and Sundays, Feb. 8-23, 2014 – for a run of three total weekends.

Billed as a "contemporary musical mash-up of fairy tales," this original theatrical production focuses on three popular princesses: Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Snow White. These pretty pals learn a powerful lesson: Sometimes, to snag that "happy ending," you really have to grab hold of your own destiny. In other words, stop hoping some dashing dude will appear and save the day. Along the way, the Evil Queen and Good Fairy offer these gals some guidance.

Every date has two performance times, at 2 and 4 p.m. But arrive early! Before each show – at 1:45 and 3:45 p.m. – promises interactive fun with the show's characters. Kids go to different stations, collect a sticker and do an activity. If they complete all the activities, they get a raffle ticket for a potential prize, drawn after the show. And stick around: The actresses reappear for photo ops aplenty, sure to leave your little princesses glowing.

The show is geared at lower-elementary kids/audiences ages 3 and older. Ultimately, organizers say it depends how well your child can sit during a 30-minute performance. Also, besides being produced by this Oakland County nonprofit professional theater troupe, there's another hometown tie: It's written and directed by Emilio Rodriguez, a Detroit high school English and theater teacher.

AWAKE! runs for three weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, Feb. 8-9, 15-16 and 22-23, 2014. Show times are 2 and 4 p.m. – but again, arrive 15 minutes early for pre-show activities. Advance tickets are $10/adults and $8/kids ages 10 and under; add $2 if purchasing at the door. There's ample free parking and handicap accessibility.
