Happy Passover! If you’re celebrating with family this week, you’ve likely prepared one – or all – of the six traditional Passover foods, which include charoset, hard-boiled egg, roasted lamb or goat shankbone, karpas, chazeret and maror. To make something extra special with the kids to celebrate the holiday this year, try creating this Passover Seder platter – along with a chalkboard plate than can be used over and over again. The Make It blog shows you how to make this platter, which has six spots for each of the traditional foods.
Materials
- Large oval wood platter
- Chalkboard paint
- Acrylic craft paints
- Foam paintbrush
- Angled paintbrush
- Pint glass
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Sanding block
- Chalk paint pen
Instructions
1. Start by sanding any rough spots on your platter. You can paint the platter one solid color if you’d like – or leave it natural.
2. Next, trace the top of your pint glass onto your platter. Space the six circles equally around the edge of the surface, leaving the center open.
3. In the center space, draw a triangle. Use a ruler to help draw straight lines.
4. With all of the circles drawn, apply a small amount of chalkboard paint to your angled brush. Outline a circle and then fill in with your paintbrush and paint. Repeat this for each of your circles and triangle. Once the paint has dried, apply a second coat.
5. With your colorful acrylic paints, apply polka dots around the outside of each circle. Add any other embellishments to the platter that you’d like. We added a few strips of washi tape to either side of the platter, as well as extra gold polka dots to the center rectangle.
6. In each circle, write the name of each of the six traditional Passover Seder foods. Place a small bowl on each when it’s time to serve. Add your family’s name or the year to the center of the rectangle.
