The Nutcracker by BalletMet Columbus at the Detroit Opera House

There’s nothing like a performance of The Nutcracker to help kick off the most wonderful time of the year.

You’ll find a great opportunity to see it this season at the Detroit Opera House Nov. 27-29 and Dec. 5-6 as the theater brings back the BalletMet Columbus production, which has been an annual event at the theatre since 2001, says Jill Zylinski, communications manager at Michigan Opera Theatre.

The much-loved ballet will feature a cast of more than 100 dancers and local children, narration by Sir Roger Moore and Tchaikovsky’s score performed by the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra. All ages are welcome to attend.

“It’s a very family-friendly show,” Zylinski says.

In fact, attending The Nutcracker at the Detroit Opera House has become a favorite holiday tradition for many local families.

“People return every year,” she says. “For a lot of people it’s become their family holiday tradition. They have family in town and they’ll come and it sort of kicks off the holiday season.”

The theater added a second weekend for The Nutcracker this year due to high demand.

“There are people in the metro Detroit area who travel out of town and a lot of those patrons expressed that they’d like to come see The Nutcracker but they’re not in town,” Zylinski says. “We’re opening up that second weekend so that everyone can see it.”

Children who attend a matinee are in for a special treat. Plan to arrive about an hour before the show to see live reindeer outside, listen to local choirs and take part in crafts and activities inside the lobby. Snacks will be available and you can have your photo taken with Santa Claus and the Nutcracker. A buffet lunch is also available before matinees for $11 per person.

After the performance, kids are invited to join in the Sugar Plum Parade and explore the scenes backstage.

Tickets are priced between $29-$99, with prices subject to change.

Times and dates are as follows:

  • Friday, Nov. 27: 2:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 28: 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 29: 2:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 5: 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
