Things to do with kids at Yates Cider Mill
Yates is typically open from March through November, but the bulk of the farm fun happens in the fall. Check out these fun activities to enjoy with kids at Yates Cider Mill.Â
Enjoy tasty treatsÂ
Yates is best known for its  fresh-pressed cider and homemade donuts, but it offers plenty of other yummy bakery goodies and treats too. Indulge in an apple fritter (available on Fridays only!) or try a frozen treat from the Yates Ice Cream Shoppe. Ice cream is available from mid-April through Labor Day, and treats at the historic cider mill are available from spring through fall.
On weekends in September and October, watch fudge being made at the Frankenmuth Fudge shop and try old-fashioned candies like taffy and peanut brittle. Don’t have a sweet tooth? Grilled hot dogs and roasted corn are available on weekends in September and October too. Â
Meet farm animalsÂ
Feed little goats, cows, llamas and other friendly farm animals at the petting zoo. After Labor Day, pony rides are available on Saturdays and Sundays. There is an 80 lb weight limit and an $8 fee to ride.Â
Take a hike or bike rideÂ
Burn off those fall treats by taking in the scenic fall views on a hike or bike ride. Yates has two main trails to explore on the property. The Railroad Trail is a half-mile route along the Clinton River and is the most accessible of the two trails. The Cider Mill Loop is nearly a mile long and filled with twists and turns that take you through the woods. The Gene Shepherd Park Connector trail connects the park to the Cider Mill Loop. For ambitious families, the Macomb Orchard Trail, Clinton River Trail and a bridge leading to Bloomer State Park are just a short walk or ride away. Â
In the spring and summer months, the Yates River Walk offers a picturesque view of the Clinton River.Â
Visit the Apple TentÂ
The apple tent is loaded with souvenirs and gifts. Pick up pre-bagged apples to take home, or hand-pick your own bag of apples. You’ll find jams and jellies, honey, maple syrup and other farm fresh snacks. The apple tent is open daily in September and October.Â
Tips for visiting Yates Cider Mill with kidsÂ
- Pets are allowed on the property, but not inside buildings. Crowded weekends are not the best environment for animals, so it’s best to leave your family’s pets at home, especially if they are uncomfortable in crowds. All pets must be friendly, kept on a leash and cleaned up after. Â
- Dress for the weather! Most of the fun at Yates Cider Mill happens outdoors, so be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get a bit messy.
