The Lego Store at Somerset Collection in Troy

Loved by families for 80 years, Lego – the famous toy brand featuring all those colorful connecting brick pieces – has a little home of its own right here in metro Detroit, filled with tons of fun for kids of all ages.

Nestled up in the third floor of Troy’s Somerset Collection’s north complex, The Lego Store has been delighting kids since opening in 2010 – holding the distinction of the first Lego shop in Michigan. It’s known for its hands-on play area, cool family events – and, of course, bright building supplies galore.

“It’s all about a hands-on experience for kids,” says Julie Stern, past brand relations manager at Lego.

Plenty of the latest models – from castles to gardens – are on hand throughout the store on a daily basis. Many are completed sets available for sale at the store. Kids can take their pick from the 300 kits – and even head to the Lego “Living Room,” situated in the center of the store, to get cracking on assembling their new find.

Having trouble visualizing what your set will look like once it’s complete? Use the Lego Digital Box Display. Simply hold the box up to the mirrored display and a 3D replication of what’s inside appears in the reflection. Two words: So cool!

Another nifty offering at the Lego store is the Pick-A-Brick wall. It’s like a bulk candy area – except kids grab little buckets (they come in large and small) and fill ’em up with a vast array of colors and styles of Lego pieces, such as tiny tires, flowers, uniquely colored bricks and more. The selection is always changing.

Just for kids, the shop also hosts a Monthly Mini Model Build. Held on first Tuesdays and geared at ages 6 to 14, these fun events let children create a cool LEGO model and take it home – free of charge! Themes change from month to month, and are limited to about 250. So be sure to check the store’s calendar and get there early to get yours.

In addition to all of this, birthday parties for up to 10 kids, as well as Lego club parties, are welcome here. Parents should contact the store directly to register.

The Lego Store sets itself apart from other toy retailers in its focus not just on buying the Lego merch, but offering kids interactive fun. So swing by and get building!

The Lego Store at the Somerset Collection is located at 2800 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy. It’s open during regular mall hours, which are typically 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and noon-6 p.m. Sundays. To learn more, call 248-643-6360.
