Why Detroit City FC’s New Stadium Is Big News for Families

A 15,000 seat soccer-specific stadium is planned for a corner bordering Detroit's Southwest and Corktown neighborhoods.

Fans of Detroit City Football Club, the city’s professional soccer team, have a new reason to cheer.

Construction on a new stadium, AlumniFi Field, is expected to begin in Detroit’s Southwest neighborhood on the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street. The field is slated to open in 2027.

A partnership between AlumniFi, a digital banking company, and the Detroit City Football Club (Detroit City FC) is behind the project. Detroit City FC began in 2012 and has since grown into a minor league soccer success story.

The club has a cult-like following of passionate fans and has expanded with a semi-pro women’s team, an academy, youth programs and adult recreation leagues.

The new soccer-specific, 15,000 seat professional sports stadium marks a big shift for a team that started out playing on a high school field.

“As longtime residents of the city, the leaders and founders of the Club view this stadium not only as an opportunity for our organization and sport, but as a civic endeavor to give back to the city we love,” said Sean Mann, Detroit City FC CEO in a statement.

“Through our partnership, AlumniFi has been working with us on a shared vision for a stronger, more connected Detroit, creating an environment where everyone from youth to adults can thrive,” Mann added.

Fans can still catch exciting games at the club’s current home field, Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. Deposits for the 2027 season at the new AlumniFi Field are now available for purchase

Ways for kids to get involved

Detroit City FC offers a range of youth opportunities, from early developmental programs to high school travel programs across metro Detroit.

The club’s Detroit City Youth soccer offers 21 teams playing in the Director’s Academy, Michigan State Premier Soccer League (MSPSP), Michigan State Developmental Soccer League (MSDSL), or Western Suburban Soccer League (WSSL).

Even toddlers can get kicking. The club’s Tots & Foundations program offers sessions for kids as young as 2.

Soccer-loving kids can also get more training at camps and clinics offered by the club and held throughout metro Detroit.

Things to do near the new stadium

AlumniFi Field is located at the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street in Southwest Detroit bordering the Corktown neighborhood.

The new field is just a short walk away from the recently renovated Michigan Central. The historic station is home to multiple retail spaces and outdoor plazas, including Yellow Light (perfect for a quick donut stop) or Neighbor x Folk (a shop focused on locally made goods).

AlumniFi Field is also near many stellar food spots. Families can grab a bite at Mexican Village, Sicily’s Pizzeria, Mercury Burger & Bar or Supergeil, just to name a few options.
