Yet just 15 minutes east of downtown Toledo, families can stay at the Maumee Bay State Lodge. As for places to take kids, this Maumee Bay resort is tops. When you go, try these six activities.
Ride bikes. Rent bikes to zip along the trails lining the Lake Erie beach and through the property’s meadows.
Watch for birds. You might even see a bald eagle along the boardwalk trail. There’s a short loop and two-mile path.
Roast a marshmallow. On Saturday nights, the lodge has bonfires and all the fixings for s’mores (try the fireplace in the lobby if it’s raining).
Play wallyball. Check out racquetballs, rackets or a volleyball to use in the indoor courts.
Visit the beach. An inland lake has changing rooms, picnic tables and food booths (open select hours).
Canoe the lake. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent and launching on a dedicated canoeing pond near the swimming beach. The lake is the perfect size for beginners just getting the hang of using paddles.
